It was a strange episode on American Airlines flight 1346 Friday as a 25-year-old man touched the faces of other passengers and sprayed them with an unknown substance before jumping off the grounded plane, Phoenix, Arizona, police said in a press release.
Passengers are going on other planes. Passengers go home, work, schools, shopping malls, movies....

Over 600 cases in USA. A lot in New York.

People who recently had surgery, live in nursing homes, or who have breathing tubes, feeding tubes or central venous catheters appear to be at highest risk.

"Based on information from a limited number of patients, 30 – 60% of people with C. auris infections have died. However, many of these people had other serious illnesses that also increased their risk of death," the CDC said.

    Treating Candida auris
While most Candida auris infections are treatable with antifungal medications, the CDC says it's concerned that some have proven to be resistant to all three main classes of antifungal medications. "In this situation, multiple antifungal medications at high doses may be needed to treat the infection," the CDC said.

Three pandemics --obesity, undernutrition and climate changing.

Climate change can be considered a pandemic because of its sweeping effects on the health of humans and the natural systems we depend on (ie, planetary health). These three pandemics—obesity, undernutrition, and climate change—represent The Global Syndemic that affects most people in every country and region worldwide. They constitute a syndemic, or synergy of epidemics, because they co-occur in time and place, interact with each other to produce complex sequelae, and share common underlying societal drivers.

It’s unusual to hear of healthy, young people dying from the flu but it happens. Last year, a 21-year-old aspiring personal trainer died from complications of the flu just days after he first started having symptoms. A 37-year-old mother of two also died of the flu last January after caring for her sick kids.

As for the future, researchers say every year it is likely a small number of healthy people will die from the seasonal flu, but across the world, it is the underprivileged who are most at risk.

"Because most of the world does not have access to the same level of prevention and medical care as developed countries, the greatest burden of any influenza pandemic can be expected to effect those least privileged,” researchers wrote in the journal of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
“Globally, environmental issues such as cold climates, lack of sewage systems, and lack of quality housing with amenities such as central heating are likely to contribute to excess mortality.”

New pathogens emerge all the time as the world population increases and humanity encroaches on wild environments. It's becoming easier and easier for individual people or small groups to create weaponised diseases that could spread like wildfire around the globe.
According to Gates, a small non-state actor could build an even deadlier form of smallpox in a lab.
And in our interconnected world, people are always hopping on planes, crossing from cities on one continent to those on another in a matter of hours.

The pilot reported two male passengers on board with extremely high fevers and approximately 100 passengers "coughing non-stop."
When CBP--Customs & Border Protection-- was informed that passengers were experiencing flu-like symptoms, an Incident Command Center was activated: "CBP and the CDC have worked with state and local authorities .... develop policies, procedures, and protocols to identify travelers that are known by U.S. public health officials to have a communicable disease and to handle in a manner that minimizes risk to the public. These procedures were utilized to mitigate any health-related concerns on the flight."

Eric Phillips, a spokesman for NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, initially tweeted that the flight stopped in Mecca, which is experiencing a flu outbreak, and "early indications point to that as a possibility."

Malaysia reports H5N1 bird flu outbreak on farm: OIE  August 2018

PARIS (Reuters) - Malaysia has reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N1 bird flu virus on a farm in the eastern region of Sabah, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Monday, citing a report from Malaysia's veterinary authorities.

The virus killed 3,000 out of 28,000 egg-laying chickens on the farm in Kampung Kauluan and all of the remaining birds were slaughtered, the Paris-based OIE said in an website alert.

Now an initiative led by Tom Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has developed a tool that spotlights gaps in preparedness, and actions that countries and organizations can take to close them. The new website, PreventEpidemics.org, gives an individual score to each country and uses color codes to rank the world by five levels of preparedness.

Emergency preparedness drill exposes gaps in response after mock virus 'kills' 900M

A team at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security created the “Clade X” simulation drill, and tagged the disease as “moderately contagious” and “moderately lethal,” Business Insider reported.

The researchers said Clade X was comparable to the SARS virus, which had a mortality rate of about 10 percent and infected more than 8,000 between 2002 and 2003. However, the results of their drill found that after 20 months, Clade X would have wiped out 150 million people worldwide, and if no vaccine could be produced, the total number of fatalities would reach 900 million, or 10 percent of the global population.
The drill was held on May 15 and included former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Ind.) and former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Julie Gerberding. The mock scenario pinned the “bioengineered virus” to a rogue group called “A Brighter Dawn” that sought to reduce the world’s population to pre-industrial levels, according to the report.

    This is bad.
    Ebola, Nipah, Zika
Even measles and mumps can be fatal
Add the MDRO --multiple drug resistant organisms
    MRSA methicillin resistant staph aureus
Remember the Fourth Hourseman episode --Andrew said --The staff is coming down with it as fast as the patients. Had to turn away patients, not enough beds.
