Re: Did Terry Nation know where things were heading?

Oh no. Superbugs.

https://www.rt.com/usa/423153-nightmare-bacteria-cdc-report/

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is warning Americans about a drug-resistant “nightmare bacteria” that has spread to every state after more than 200 cases last year.

More than 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by drug-resistant germs, according to the CDC, and last year a first-of-its-kind nationwide study uncovered 221 instances of a rare antibiotic resistant (AR) “nightmare bacteria”.
It mostly afflicts people either in or visiting hospitals and nursing homes.

Melinda and Bill Gates have both repeatedly warned that the world is unprepared for an infectious disease outbreak, and experts agree that the risk is high.
If you look at recent disease outbreaks around the globe, you can see how far we have to go in terms of preparation.
It's possible that a major outbreak could be intentionally created as the result of a biological weapon, but Poste thinks a serious bioterrorism attack is less likely due to the complexity of pulling something like that off.
In New York City's hazard mitigation plan, the city indicates that a bioterror attack could have an impact on a similar scale as that of a nuclear weapon. And they say that the likelihood of bioterror attack is far greater.

Re: Did Terry Nation know where things were heading?

It's back
On Friday, the World Health Organization announced its plan to send the experimental vaccine to northwest Congo, where there have been about 32 suspected or confirmed cases since early April and 18 deaths.

“We are very concerned and planning for all scenarios, including the worst-case scenario,” Peter Salama, the WHO’s deputy director-general of emergency preparedness and response, said in Geneva on Friday.

Now in India
Nipah Virus Outbreak: Death Toll Rises In India As Brain-Damaging Disease Spreads
As the rare virus claims more lives in the Indian state of Kerala, concerns have been raised about the potential of Nipah to become a global health emergency.

This is bad.
Ebola, Nipah, Zika
Even measles and mumps can be fatal
Add the MDRO --multiple drug resistant organisms
MRSA methicillin resistant staph aureus
Remember the Fourth Hourseman episode --Andrew said --The staff is coming down with it as fast as the patients. Had to turn away patients, not enough beds.

Emergency preparedness drill exposes gaps in response after mock virus 'kills' 900M

A team at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security created the “Clade X” simulation drill, and tagged the disease as “moderately contagious” and “moderately lethal,” Business Insider reported.

The researchers said Clade X was comparable to the SARS virus, which had a mortality rate of about 10 percent and infected more than 8,000 between 2002 and 2003. However, the results of their drill found that after 20 months, Clade X would have wiped out 150 million people worldwide, and if no vaccine could be produced, the total number of fatalities would reach 900 million, or 10 percent of the global population.
The drill was held on May 15 and included former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Ind.) and former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Julie Gerberding. The mock scenario pinned the “bioengineered virus” to a rogue group called “A Brighter Dawn” that sought to reduce the world’s population to pre-industrial levels, according to the report.

We are not ready
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2018/06/21/how-prepared-is-the-world-for-the-next-epidemic-this-tool-shows-most-countries-are-not/

Now an initiative led by Tom Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has developed a tool that spotlights gaps in preparedness, and actions that countries and organizations can take to close them. The new website, PreventEpidemics.org, gives an individual score to each country and uses color codes to rank the world by five levels of preparedness.

Malaysia reports H5N1 bird flu outbreak on farm: OIE  August 2018

PARIS (Reuters) - Malaysia has reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N1 bird flu virus on a farm in the eastern region of Sabah, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Monday, citing a report from Malaysia's veterinary authorities.

The virus killed 3,000 out of 28,000 egg-laying chickens on the farm in Kampung Kauluan and all of the remaining birds were slaughtered, the Paris-based OIE said in an website alert.
