It looks like it is getting worse in the UK - time to quote Tom Price:

Re: Did Terry Nation know where things were heading?

Aussie Flu is very bad.
Flu vaccine is only 10% effective.

If you are a patient,  you go to the Emergency Room,  you can be treated or admitted.
There are signs that say -- if you have a fever or a cough, you must wear a mask.

What about the healthcare workers,; doctors, nurses, and more.

If you work in a hospital,  after 3 days, you are placed on disability.
Then you go to a doctor, sit in a waiting room with coughing people, get re-infected.
Go back to work, get sick again. Relapse is worse than the first time.
You keep going to work, sicker than before, spreading the flu to everyone.
Why?
Because, if you call out sick again, within a 3 month period, you will receive a disciplinary action.
You can be written up, suspended  or even terminated for "sick time abuse" ,  during a flu epidemic.

With SARS, a Toronto hospital, was closed and quarantined.
So, sick healthcare workers, travel by train, bus spread it. However, you need your job.
Hospital administration could care less if you are sick.
Go to work, spread it.

The overall impact can vary greatly year to year, but flu always takes a substantial toll. CDC estimates that influenza has caused 9 million to 35 million illnesses, 140,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 to 56,000 deaths in the United States each year since 2010. In many cases, hospitalizations and deaths do not show up in official reports, for a variety of reasons — including the fact that most people with flu are never tested for it and that states are not required to report adult flu deaths.

One reason this could be a bad season: A majority of patients tested so far carried a type of influenza virus, called H3N2, that is linked to increased hospitalizations and deaths in young children and people over age 65, according to CDC.  Vaccines often are less effective against these viruses than other flu viruses.

“It was over the weekend that we recognized that our volume was increasing,” said Michelle Gunnett, RN-Palomar Health, Escondido, Calif.

North of San Diego, emergency room doctors set up a special tent outside the hospital to handle a surge in flu patients.

By September Australia was in the grips of an aggressive flu season with more than 93,000 people struck down by the serious disease in less than a month

Thanks to plummeting temperatures as well as the ease of modern travel, it began migrating to the more heavily populated north hemipshere where the general flu season was just getting underway.

Our map shows how the virus moved from Papua New Guinea into Asia and then spread on to the Middle East.

But another map lays bare how the influenza epidemic is swiftly invading Europe.

Yesterday "Aussie flu" was feared to have spread to almost all parts of the UK, following a surge in flu cases over the weekend.
He added: "The French are having real problems and we are likely to see the same here within weeks."

Professor Robert Dingwall, a flu expert at Nottingham Trent University told The Sun Online the UK must brace itself for the flu crisis to "get worse before it gets better".
He warned the NHS is facing an unprecedented challenge, and urged businesses to have contingency plans ready, as the number of cases is expected to rise in the coming weeks.

NHS trusts may be forced to cancel non-emergency operations well into February, Prof Dingwall told The Sun Online, as hospitals struggle to cope amid the winter crisis.

He added: "The French are having real problems and we are likely to see the same here within weeks."

. People under 16 — who are considered more likely to spread the flu — aren’t allowed to visit people at the hospital, and patients can have only one visitor at a time, said hospital president Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz.

“As we did during H1N1, we pulled out the same policies,” she said. “We’ve been treating almost five times the number of influenza patients that we typically see.”

Hospitals across the state are sending away ambulances, flying in nurses from out of state and not letting children visit their loved ones for fear they’ll spread the flu. Others are canceling surgeries and erecting tents in their parking lots so they can triage the hordes of flu patients.

Staff members at Torrance Memorial Medical Center have been working long hours to care for a swell in sick patients that began in late December, said Dr. James McKinnell, infectious disease specialist. Some patients are incredibly ill with multiple strains of the flu, or the flu and pneumonia.

Several hospitals in California are treating flu patients in so-called “surge tents” intended for major disasters.

Re: Did Terry Nation know where things were heading?

After the "Post Xmas" flu rush, probably caused by families far & wide, spreading their germs with each other over the "Festive" season, it seems to have gone off the headlines in the UK at the moment.
